01 · CONTEXT

A brief history

MNQ launched on May 6, 2019, as part of CME's Micro E-mini equity index suite. Its underlying Nasdaq-100 index began in 1985 and tracks large nonfinancial Nasdaq-listed companies.

02 · BENEFITS & TRADEOFFS

Why traders study MNQ

  • One-tenth the multiplier of NQ provides finer increments of index exposure.

  • A single contract offers exposure to an index rather than selecting an individual stock. Concentration still matters.

A smaller contract changes exposure size. It does not make a strategy profitable or eliminate leverage.

03 · RELATIONSHIPS

Related markets to compare

Study NQ and the Nasdaq-100 alongside MES and the S&P 500. Compare moves in Treasury yields and major index constituents as context; measure relationships instead of assuming they stay fixed.

Suggested study comparisons, not fixed correlation coefficients. Record the time period and exceptions.

04 · CHART STUDY

Common chart structures to study

Ranges, support and resistance, breakouts and pullbacks are useful observations to practice. These exercises do not claim a pattern occurs more often in MNQ or predicts the next move.

  • Compare the cash-session opening range with the overnight range.

  • Study a trend pullback versus a failed breakout; write down what would invalidate each interpretation.

05 · RISK ASSESSMENT

Smaller size. Substantial risk.

Fast index moves and concentrated exposure to large growth companies can amplify losses. Pairing MNQ with MES can add overlapping equity exposure rather than offsetting risk.

Hypothetical loss example: A 50-point adverse move × $2 per point = $100 loss on one MNQ contract.

Fees and slippage add to the example. A stop order may not fill at its requested price. Margin is collateral, not a maximum loss. Leveraged futures can lose more than the initial deposit.

YOUR FIRST STUDY SESSION

Start with a written observation

Compare MNQ and MES during the same session without treating a difference as a signal.

Use a simulator first. Record what you see, what would challenge your interpretation, and what you still need to verify.
